Plywood or Furniture Board Cabinets?
One thing to consider when selecting your cabinets is the type of wood you want the cabinet boxes crafted from. Each manufacturer has their standard box construction for each cabinet line and some manufacturers give you the ability to choose. The two most common selections are plywood or furniture board. Both are great options, but the biggest deciding factor is whether or not to upgrade to plywood. Don’t worry, we’re here to break it down for you.
Plywood is made of layers of wood glued together with alternating wood grain to create a strong and stable wood. Furniture board, also referred to as particle board, is made of wood chips and a synthetic resin pressed together to create wood boards that are often cheaper than plywood boards, but both have benefits to consider.
Although it is typically an up charge to go with plywood cabinets, there are some advantages to this selection. The biggest advantage is the strength and durability of plywood, but other advantages include weight bearing abilities and construction longevity.
The biggest advantage to furniture board is less expensive than plywood. Some cabinet manufacturers are more selective than others on the grades of furniture board that they will use when building cabinets, so there can still be a price variation. Depending on the cabinet manufacturer, some use a combination of furniture board and plywood depending on whether the side of a cabinet is finished or not.
The best way to guarantee you’re making the right selection is to look over your budget and discuss with your designer and contractor which option will work best for your project. Our designers are happy to sit down with you to further discuss the pros and cons of plywood and furniture board as well as which brand offers all the best benefits for your needs.
