Insinkerator Garbage Disposals
Nothing ruins the holiday spirits quite like a clogged sink. And as much as we love our plumber friends, you don’t want to have to call them during the holidays. In order to avoid a clogged sink for Christmas, we sat down with Kathy to talk about how having the right garbage disposal can save your holidays and your sink!
Today we’ll cover all the basics to help you decide what garbage disposal best suits you. Whether you need to add a disposal to a current sink or upgrade your current disposal, this post is for you. If you just need a plumber to give it a look, we’ve got you covered.
Garbage disposals come in a range of power levels, measured in horsepower (HP) and the recommended power varies based on the amount of usage your kitchen gets. In the showroom, we typically recommend the ½, ¾ or 1 HP disposal models. You know how much abuse your kitchen sink takes, but below is a general guideline for how much horsepower you may be looking for.
Most commonly people will install a ¾ HP disposal in their home. However, if you tend to use your disposal for “big” jobs like canning, you may consider upgrading to the 1 HP model.
½ HP: Great for a condo, apartment or small home. Ideal for a kitchen that doesn’t get a great deal of use. These disposals can handle your basic level food scraps.
¾ HP: Most commonly purchased and installed disposal. Ideal for single family homes. These disposals are ideal for larger food scraps and harder level foods such as vegetables and small bones.
1 HP: Ideal for large families, think 6+ people in one home. These are ideal for kitchens that get a great deal of use on a regular basis.
Disposals are fairly simple to add on to your sink or replace if you need a little more power. Once you’ve met with one of our consultants and decided which disposal works best for you, all you need to do is call your plumber and get your disposal ordered. Your plumber will take care of the rest!
A noteworthy perk of choosing an InSinkErator disposal is that they come with a handy dandy tool to fix minor jams. You just insert the tool into the disposal and work it back and forth to free up the jam. The tool works great for minor jams and saves your fingers from potential doom. It goes without saying that calling a plumber is your best bet when this tool doesn’t do the job.
We can’t recommend these disposals enough, especially with the holidays upon us! Based on experience, Kathy highly recommends making sure your disposal is in tip top shape before your holiday festivities. Nothing is worse than a backed-up sink at Christmas!
