Functional Kitchen Storage

It’s a new month and with that we’re starting an exciting new series! We sat down with one of our Kitchen and Bath Designers, Sherri Eagle to get her expert advice on all things design. Today we’re kicking things off with an inside scoop on custom cabinetry offered by Plato, one of the lines we offer at Studio H2O.

Plato Woodwork cabinets are made in Plato, Minnesota and offer a variety of styles, wood grains and finishes to create the perfect cabinetry for your space. Their custom line offers an array of both base and upper cabinet storage that go beyond basic shelves. Whether you have a large kitchen space or limited space, Sherri gave us a great list of unique storage options to create a functional space.

“When it comes to kitchen storage, it’s important to think about what it is you’re storing and how you’d like it stored,” said Sherri. “Standard cabinets come with adjustable shelves, but over time those shelves get cluttered and finding things becomes a task. Upgrading some of your cabinets with Plato’s storage options can drastically change the functionality of your kitchen.”

Plato offers a unique selection of storage alternatives that fit in either your base or upper cabinets. We’ll break our storage options down into hidden vs. visual storage.

Hidden Storage:

  • Pull-Out Canister Organizer

  • Clear your counters from cluttered utensil organizers by neatly storing them in a pull-out cabinet. Sherri recommends placing this next to the stove for easy access to all your spoons and spatulas.

  • Pull-Out Tray Dividers

  • Tray dividers are perfect for de-cluttering your cookie sheets and muffin tins, making them easy to access.

  • Pull-Out Spice Rack

  • Instead of filling a cabinet with spices/seasonings you have to dig through, create a functional cabinet that offers easy visible access to all your spices. According to Sherri, this is another great option to place next to your stove.

  • Pull-Out Can Storage

  • Don’t have a lot of pantry space? Don’t worry, add a cabinet with can storage. The shelves roll in and out easily providing ample storage with easy accessibility to all your canned goods while freeing up space in your pantry!

  • Pull-Out Towel Bar

  • This is a perfect option for storage next to your sink. Easily hide away your hand/dish towels with a pull-out towel bar. No more trying to hang them from the sink/cabinet doors.

  • Base Mixer Cabinet

  • Create more counter space by adding a base Mixer Cabinet. This cabinet comes with a swing-up shelf that holds your mixer and locks into place while in use and then easily lowers back into the cabinet when not in use. How cool is that!?

Visual Storage:

  • Slide Out Mesh Baskets

  • These mesh baskets are made of stainless steel and slide out to create a visual storage space for your produce. Functional and aesthetically pleasing? What’s not to love!?

  • Glass Drawer Fronts

  • Instead of taking up space on your counter or in your pantry storing flour, pasta or other pantry staples, opt for Glass drawer fronts. These drawers include glass fronts creating a great visual display for your baking or cooking necessities while also making them easily accessible!

  • Wine Racks

  • Wine racks are great to display your favorite wines/other beverages in a way that’s not only eye catching, but functional! Plato offers wine racks in both base and upper cabinets allowing you to build out the beverage bar of your dreams, or just add a little flair to your kitchen space.

  • Bookshelves

  • Bookshelves in a kitchen may sound a little odd, but Sherri gave us a great design tip; End cap your kitchen island with built in bookshelves! That way you can neatly store all your cook books and recipes while also creating another unique visual aspect to your kitchen.

As if all these storage options weren’t enough, Sherri left us with one final tip, create a breakfast nook with Plato’s banquette cabinets.

“Banquettes are a great way to maximize storage space, especially if you don’t have a lot of space to work with for a dining table and chairs,” said Sherri. “Banquette cabinets offer you the seating you need while also optimizing storage space for the odds and ends you can’t find a home for in the kitchen.”

Plato’s Banquette cabinets offer lift top or pull-out drawers for hidden storage. As Sherri said, these are perfect for creating seating and storage all in one! They offer a surplus of storage for things like table runners, place mats, decorations and even kid’s toys. Configurations can be done in a variety of ways, but it’s best to consult Sherri on what would work best in our space.
