The Studio H2O blog is back! To celebrate the return, we decided to brighten up your week with a series of posts on our latest offering - lighting. We sat down with Lauren Davies, our lighting expert, to discuss the most frequently asked questions when it comes to picking out light fixtures.
Today we’re going to help you figure out what size fixture you should have above your vanity. There is nothing more frustrating than finding the perfect fixture and realizing after it’s installed that it doesn’t adequately light up your space. Don’t worry, Lauren has the perfect solution for you.
According to Lauren, “The ideal ratio of your vanity cabinet, mirror, and light fixture is a pyramid- your cabinet is the widest item, then the mirror will be a little smaller, and your light fixture sits at the top of the ‘pyramid’.” (See below drawing.)
For those of us who don’t do well with geometry, Lauren breaks it down a little more, “If you have a 48-inch vanity (Shown in the above drawing), I recommend a 36-42 inch wide mirror and a 20-28 inch long light fixture.”
If you have a larger vanity, such as a master bath vanity with two sinks, it may be tempting to search for a large light fixture to span the entirety of your mirror… DON’T DO IT! While it may look pretty, odds are you won’t be very happy with the quality of light.
“For vanities that have two sinks and/or are larger than 60 inches wide, I recommend having two light fixtures to distribute the light more evenly. While one large fixture with 4 or 5 light bulbs can produce a lot of light, the edges of your vanity may appear dark,” said Lauren.
As tempting as it is to pick lighting based solely on what fits your design aesthetic, it’s important to consider the quality of light you’ll receive from those fixtures. That doesn’t mean you have to settle for lights you don’t love, but make sure they check both boxes!
